I’m peeking out my office window as snow softly falls on the bare branches outside. Lo and behold, winter is here. What a perfect day to share with you the wedding of Emily + James (you might remember them from their adorable apple orchard engagement session this fall).
James + Emily were married at the gorgeous, newly restored Indiana Landmarks Center and their reception was at the Columbia Club on the Circle downtown. Both venues completely suited their classic, elegant event. The day was immaculate, just a little chilly with a light December breeze, and all details were set. But what happens if, on this perfect wedding day, you get the flu?
If you’re Emily + James, you improvise. Andy + I watched the day unfold in awe. We have never, in our career (140+ weddings), seen a couple handle a situation with such humility and poise. They opted to see each other in the morning, and a few minutes into our photos, James wasn’t feeling well. But he pressed on with a smile on his face. No one but his close family knew that something was wrong.
And then came the ceremony. The music started, the groomsmen filed in, the mothers lit the candles. Each bridesmaid made their way down the aisle, and then Emily + her father, as planned. But when it was time to exchange vows, Emily looked at James and whispered, “Are you OK?” He shook his head and his father raced to his side before his knees hit the floor. Then Emily sat with him, her hand on his shoulder, and they continued the ceremony, seated. She held James’s face in her hands, looked him in the eyes and repeated, “in sickness and in health, I will love and honor you all the days of my life.” Then they were announced, to a standing ovation, and continued on as husband + wife.
Without a doubt, this was the most meaningful beginning to a marriage we’ve witnessed.

One more thing I’ll mention: Emily’s father works for IPL and arranged to have the building lights make the shape of the heart for a few hours until their reception started.![]()

What more can we say? We adore you both. Thank you so much, for everything. We’re lucky to know you.
xoxo, A+A
